Mongolian carpets are high-quality, handmade rugs that have been traded for centuries, since the founding of the independent Republic of Mongolia over 1,000 years ago.

The Mongolian people are nomads, and their rugs reflect their travelling needs. They were used not only as floor covers but also for the walls and doorways of their tents. Each carpet is unique, even if similar motifs and patterns are used. Contemporary Mongolian rugs maintain the fine quality for which they are cherished.

We are always happy to collaborate with you on a custom carpet that meets all your specifications...and your wildest dreams! Of course, it will be woven on our very own looms with the best materials under the supervision of our experts.

Mongolian rugs depict Chinese-influenced patterns, such as fretwork spandrels, endless knots, shou symbols, tigers and Buddhist motifs. They also have a preference for eastern design principles that use negative space effectively and incorporate a less-is-more style that works well in modern interiors. With a rich history dating back to the Mongol period in China, these carpets feature a transparent composition, utilizing see-through Oriental motifs against a uniform ground that exemplifies antique Chinese rug design. Depicting meanders, knot-work, and fretted medallions, with a taste for open spaces, these masterful carpets were believed to have been created by foreign minorities with outside influence of their surrounding culture.

Colors schemes are soft and earthy with emphasis on subtle mixing of tones or variegation. Neutrals, somber earth tones, stately jewel tones and coral pink accents are found within the color palettes. Weavers used more restricted color schemes than Chinese weavers, but they also used colors differently to produce decorative variegation and textural patterns. Many of these graphic rugs feature subtle variations on traditional eastern motifs. Highly decorative felt rugs, panels with undulating motifs, fretwork spandrels, endless knots, shou symbols, tigers and Buddhist motifs, were created with a variety of Chinese patterns and Buddhist symbols that are drawn in a simplified manner.

Mongolian carpets utilize eastern design principles that use negative space effectively and incorporate a less-is-more style that works well in modern interiors. With the ability to blend with mid-century modern, and art deco, decor, you are sure to find a Mongolian rug that will become the centerpiece of your living space.
