Bergama carpets are hand-woven carpets from a northwestern region of Turkey. Carpets are produced in about 75 different villages. They began appearing in Holbein paintings in the 15th century, and some rugs from that period still exist in museum collections. the motifs for these carpets fall into two categories. One has large, geometric patterns, believed to be of Caucasian origin, while the other has a distinct floral and leaf pattern, believed to be of Turkish origin. The carpets are made of sheep's wool, have symmetric knots of low density, and are approximately 10 -13 square feet in size.
