Between the 12th and 16th centuries, the city of Tabriz enjoyed its Golden Age of rug weaving. A high level of craftsmanship, merging the art of miniature painting and weaving, characterized rugs from this time period. While abstract patterns were the most widely produced, the writings of ancient Oriental poets as well as the covers of manuscripts often inspired the picturesque themes played out on these rugs. Seasons, the moon, fish and trees, snippets of scenes from battles, mosques, and palaces were not uncommon imagery. As one of the oldest rug-making cities, the historical importance and impact of Tabriz on this art form cannot be overstated.
