As a result of its convenient location, the city of Sivas was selected by British and other European nations in the 17th and 18th centuries to set up workshops to produce Oriental carpets would appeal to Westerners and also spike demand for these rugs. Antique Sivas carpets are Persian/Iranian style rugs made in Anatolia (Turkey). These rugs can be identified by their materials, dyes, techniques, and designs. Hand-spun, naturally dyed sheep wool was used. The knots were often symmetric, while the patterns drew on Persian motifs, such as arabesques and medallions contrasted against a uniform field. From the late 19th until the late 20th century, commercial production using synthetic dyes overshadowed this ancient art and nearly caused its distinction; however, in the past fifty years efforts have taken place to insure its revival.

Hereke Carpets are highly collectible. Production began at the behest of an Ottoman sultan, Abdulmecid I, in the 1840s. These rugs were produced in large sizes because of their intended decorative use in palaces. Often made from silk, wool, cotton, as well as with gold and silver threads, the unique patterns and high count knotting techniques of these rugs recall the antique traditions from which they derive.
