Whether used as a floor covering or wall hanging, or to create decorative pillows and chairs, Kilim rugs recall the art of ancient civilizations and cultures. Weaves that are similar to those still used today first appeared about fifteen hundred years ago, in various countries within the Persian/Iranian Empire. The word "kilim" derives from a Persian/Iranian word that means "to spread roughly". Weavers typically used a diagonal weave to strengthen the structure of the rug so geometric patterns are a common design, although floral themes have been created. Various materials, often with cotton as a foundation, are used. The colors are rich, while the styles identify the village or town from which the Kilim was woven. Today, we continue to be mesmerized by the beauty and strength displayed in numerous motifs that were used in ancient times to convey ideas and communicate messages.

Flat weave carpets and rugs were created without the use of knots or need of a foundation. They are lightweight, thin but durable, and have no pile. Their design is based in the rich history of carpet weaving, and these rugs come in many patterns and styles, most notably Dhurries, Soumaks, and Kilims.

We are always happy to collaborate with you on a custom carpet that meets all your specifications...and your wildest dreams! Of course, it will be woven on our very own looms with the best materials under the supervision of our experts.

Rich in culture, their historical background is one of the most intriguing in all of art history. The “golden era” of Persian carpet weaving began around 1500, and following the Silk Road, it was during these periods that Persian rugs were being exported all over the world, from Japan to Western Europe.

In Persia, (modern day Iran), the largest carpet producing centers that flourished were Tabriz, Herat, Kashan, and Kerman. These rugs represent some of the finest examples of textile art ever produced. The complex methods and highest quality materials, including natural dyes, silk, cotton, and wool, combined with being woven by hand, ensured that these creations would last for decades, and in many cases, centuries.

Designs featured in antique rugs made in Iran are prized for their flawless proportions, and angles of spiraling curvature, resulting in an effortless fluid, and timeless, style, that exemplify their ageless elegance.

The master weavers of Persia took great pride in the textile art they created, therefore Antique Persian carpets are among the finest and most important examples of textile art, displaying some of the most beautiful and artistic creations ever crafted.
