Bakshaish/Bakhshayesh is the name of a mountainous region in northwestern Iran/Persia as well as that of the oldest carpet-producing village. Carpets from here are appreciated for their larger size, bold abstract versions of ancient tribal patterns, and the dynamic styling of classical Persian motifs. The families who made these rugs lived in tents in the mountains; they fathered, processed, and washed the wool and then made the rug. Refined patterns were not possible in coarsely woven carpets. Designers love these rugs because they approximate modern aesthetics yet are both nomadic and authentic. Animal and human figures are represented through simple geometric symbols: a person might appear as a triangle on top of a line with two additional lines to represent the hands or feet. Large, geometric designs that appear on the border create an architectural look and feel. The designs are less dense and contain fewer details. Unlike city rugs of the same time period, whose weavers had access to many dyes to create colorful designs, these rugs typically have two or three colors: undyed wool of ivory/white, beige, and brown.

We are always happy to collaborate with you on a custom carpet that meets all your specifications...and your wildest dreams! Of course, it will be woven on our very own looms with the best materials under the supervision of our experts.

Antique Persian carpets, also known as Iranian carpets, are among the most diverse and beautifully designed of all the Oriental rugs in the world. Rich in culture, their historical background is one of the most intriguing in all of art history. The “golden era” of Persian carpet weaving began around 1500, and following the Silk Road, it was during these periods that Persian rugs were being exported all over the world, from Japan to Western Europe.

In Persia, (modern day Iran), the largest carpet producing centers that flourished were Tabriz, Herat, Kashan, and Kerman. These rugs represent some of the finest examples of textile art ever produced. The complex methods and highest quality materials, including natural dyes, silk, cotton, and wool, combined with being woven by hand, ensured that these creations would last for decades, and in many cases, centuries.

Designs featured in antique rugs made in Iran are prized for their flawless proportions, and angles of spiraling curvature, resulting in an effortless fluid, and timeless, style, that exemplify their ageless elegance.

The master weavers of Persia took great pride in the textile art they created, therefore Antique Persian carpets are among the finest and most important examples of textile art, displaying some of the most beautiful and artistic creations ever crafted. Their beauty and complexity are timeless, inspiring, exciting, and masterful, making them an excellent investment in the realm of fine art, that will be enjoyed and appreciated for generations to come.
