Art Deco, or Arts Décoratifs, is a visual arts movement that emerged from France just prior to the start of World War I and ended just before the outbreak of World War II. Art Deco is recognized for its bold colors and geometric patterns, high quality craftsmanship and luxury materials, and the exotic influence of the Middle and Far East. Textiles, upholstery and carpets played an important role in this movement, with inspirations for its designs being drawn from ballet stage sets and costume design.
The history of Chinese rugs differs radically from that of the Middle East. Unlike most other carpets, antique Chinese rugs are classified by dynasty, rather than geographic location. Exposure to western taste radically caused a shift in style, since carpets were manufactured for export, rather than remaining within the country for local use. Chinese Deco Carpets, produced in the 1920s and 1930s, most notably by Walter Nichols, were made of wool and silk with spare, floral and bird designs but rich in gemstone colors.
