Hooked rugs are made by pulling fabric or yarn through a woven base with a hooked tool. Although it is believed that the first hooked rug floor mats were made in Yorkshire, England, in the early 1800s, the craft of hooked rug making was believed to have developed in the countryside along the eastern seacoast of the United States. Since recycled clothes and fabrics were used, rug hooking was considered a "poverty" craft and denigrated. (Girls from wealthier families were taught embroidery and quilting.) Despite the early "poverty" roots, and the creation of hooked rugs from countries all over the world, antique American hooked rugs are the most expensive and desirable.
