Indian production of carpets began in the fifteenth century after Babur, a descendant of Genghis Khan, raided and conquered India and established the Mughal Empire, which was then solidified under his grandson, Akbar. Persian/Iranian weavers were brought in to provide the luxurious carpets missing in India, by combining the weaver's skill and Persian motifs with the art of India and taste of its royal leaders. Production centers were established in Kashmir, Agra, Lahore, Delhi, Bhadohi and Mirzapur, among others. Each area is known for its own style of rich colors created by natural dyes and bold, unique patterns. Indian carpets truly are a reflection of the history of the nation and culture of each region. /p>
